MARICELA: UC DAVIS HEALTH AND LEFT THE COUNSELING CENTER BRINGING A VACCINATION SITE TO SOUTH SACRAMENTO. >> HAVING A PLACE THEY KNOW, THEY TRUST, THAT THEY CAN COME IN AND NOT FEEL SHAME IS IMPORTANT. MARICELA: LATINOS MAKE UP THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF COVID-19 CASES , TOPPING 1.3 MILLION DEATHS AND MORE THAN 26,000 -- 1.3 MILLION CASES AND MORE THAN 26,000 DEATHS. As COVID-19 vaccine distribution expands, so does the push for equitable distribution.UC Davis Health and La Familia Counseling Center will be bringing a vaccination site to South Sacramento every Thursday."There's a really diverse population here, and many who don't speak English as their first language. So, having a place that they know and trust and where they can come in and not feel ashamed, is very important," says Rachel Rios, executive director at La Familia Counseling Center.Leer en españolWhile Latinos are the second largest ethnic group in California, they make up the highest number of COVID-19 cases, topping 1.5 million and deaths at more than 26,000.Grief shared by people like Luis Rivera and Oscar Jiménez -- who both received the first dose of the vaccine. Neither of them was able to say goodbye and pay their last respects to their loved ones.And slowly, they see a glimpse of hope as their search for the vaccine ends at this vaccination site."I had been looking in San Francisco, in Concord and Hayward but there was no availability. I left messages but no one called me back," says Jiménez about the months of searching the vaccine.An estimated 1,600 vaccines are expected to be administered over the next two months.Vaccine availability at the South Sacramento site will increase in three weeks. The goal is to increase herd immunity, especially in the most vulnerable areas.La Familia Counseling Center is also doing a pop-up clinic once a month for people who can't get an appointment during the week; 300 vaccinations are administered in a drive-thru.
